10 Must-Have Items for Multi-Generational Family Travel
Traveling with multiple generations of your family can be an incredibly rewarding experience. From grandparents to parents, to teens and young children, these trips create memories that last a lifetime. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey, it’s essential to pack wisely. Here are 10 must-have items for multi-generational family travel:
1. Versatile Strollers, Carriers, and Adaptive Devices for Grandparents
If you have young children or toddlers, a reliable stroller or baby carrier is a must. Look for options that are lightweight, easy to fold, and suitable for different terrains. This allows grandparents and parents to take turns pushing or carrying the little ones. And don’t forget anything you may need to make the grandparents more comfortable. I once had a recliner brought aboard a cruise ship for a grandmother who had breathing difficulties while she slept. You’d be amazed at what is available if you know the right person to ask!
2. Travel-Friendly First Aid Kit
A compact first aid kit is invaluable when traveling with family members of all ages. Include essentials like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. It’s better to be prepared for minor emergencies. And do NOT put this in your checked luggage! Always carry it with you onto the plane. Especially prescription meds! If your luggage gets lost, it’s going to be quite a scramble (if not impossible) to get them replaced.
3. Travel-sized Toiletries
Obviously, this goes without saying. Opt for travel-sized versions of toiletries to save space and weight. This is especially helpful for families who might share a suitcase. Don’t forget items like sunscreen, insect repellent, and baby wipes for quick clean-ups. Also, check with your hotel to see what amenities they offer. Many times they have all you need, so you’ll have to pack very little!
4. Entertainment for All Ages
Long flights or car rides can be challenging, so be sure to pack entertainment options suitable for everyone. Load up tablets with movies and games for the kids, bring books or e-readers for the adults, and consider travel-sized board games or puzzles for quality family time. We have amassed a bunch of car games. I’ll write a blog post on that next! Also, see the home page of my blog for tips for traveling with young children (hint: it’s all about what you do BEFORE the trip that matters.) https://tesoroluxurytravelco.com/
5. Travel Adapters and Chargers
In today’s digital age, keeping devices charged is crucial. When traveling outside the country, you’ll want to invest in several travel adapters to accommodate various plug types. Multiple chargers and power banks can be a lifesaver, ensuring everyone’s devices stay powered up throughout the trip. And even if you’re in the U.S., a travel power bank can be a lifesaver! Get one that can charge multiple devices. Here’s my favorite. It’s kind of heavy, but will completely charge about 5 devices (or more) on one charge! (not an affiliate link)
6. Comfortable Walking Shoes
Well, duh, right? Comfort is key when exploring new destinations, especially for grandparents and little ones. Invest in comfortable, supportive walking shoes for the entire family. Break them in before your trip to avoid blisters and discomfort. Nothing will ruin a trip quicker than a seven-year-old with a blister. (Don’t ask how I know.)
7. Reusable Water Bottles
Staying hydrated is essential, so bring reusable water bottles for each family member. This not only saves money but also reduces plastic waste. Many destinations have refill stations or provide potable water, but of course be wary if you’re overseas of what water you’re drinking. Also, consider bringing Crystal Light on-the-go packs in case the water “tastes funny.” *Disney World, I’m looking at you.* lol. Another tip is to bring a small bottle of dish soap to rinse your bottles!
8. Travel Insurance
I always feel like a used car salesman when I bring up insurance, but I have to do my due diligence. PLEASE consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and unexpected events. It offers peace of mind, especially when traveling with older family members who may have specific health concerns. Many people think “there’s no way we’re going to cancel.” And that’s great. But if you’re in a foreign country with a health emergency, you don’t want to be stranded away from quality medical care.
9. Packing Cubes
Packing efficiently is crucial for multi-generational travel. Packing cubes help keep clothing and items organized, making it easier to find what you need. Assign different colors or compartments to family members for even greater organization. I can’t say enough good things about them!
10. A Positive Attitude and Flexibility
While not a physical item, a positive attitude and flexibility are essential for a successful multi-generational trip. Things are going to happen: delays, or changes in plans. Maintaining a positive outlook and adaptability will make the journey enjoyable for everyone. In fact, a family discussion about this before you ever leave home is probably a good idea!
